Global citizenship: understanding and impact
Explore how understanding diverse perspectives and promoting well-being contributes to a more connected and compassionate world.

Empathy and inclusion in mental health
In PSHS 104, my group undertook a mental health assignment that underscored the critical importance of mental well-being and support in everyday life. Our group approached this topic from a Personal Support Worker (PSW) perspective, examining how mental health impacts individuals, families, and entire communities. Through this assignment, I gained deeper insights into the pervasive effects of stigma, the invaluable role of empathy, and the crucial contribution of support workers in fostering dignity and inclusion for all. This experience significantly enhanced my understanding of how to provide respectful and compassionate care to clients with diverse mental health needs.

Cultural awareness and sensitivity
A significant aspect of our project involved comparing Japanese culture and its stigmas related to mental health with those prevalent in Canada. This comparison illuminated just how sensitive certain topics can be within various cultures and highlighted the paramount need for us to be more culturally aware and sensitive in our interactions and care delivery. This project underscored that true global citizenship involves recognizing and respecting these cultural nuances to provide truly inclusive and effective support.

Making a global impact
This project profoundly demonstrated how my work and interests contribute to the broader world. By understanding the complexities of mental health and cultural sensitivity, I hope to make a tangible impact by promoting dignity and reducing stigma in healthcare settings. My goal is to foster an environment where everyone receives respectful and compassionate care, regardless of their cultural background, ultimately contributing to a more globally aware and empathetic society.
